FAQS

   FAQS

Do you take insurance?
Insurance: For his private practice, Dr. Lam does not participate in any health insurance plans as an in-network provider, nor does he accept payments from insurance plans.  This allows him to see fewer patients, to spend more time with each patient, and minimizes non-essential paperwork, thereby delivering higher quality health care that also protects your confidential patient information from being shared with insurance companies.  He will be happy to provide you with an invoice which will serve as a Health Insurance Claim Form (HICF) to submit for "out-of-network" reimbursement.  In such a case, you will be reimbursed directly by your insurance company, and full payment is expected at the time of service.

Fees:  Dr. Lam's fees are comparable to those of other psychiatrists in New York City.  Please contact Dr. Lam to discuss his fee schedule.

What should I expect for my initial evaluation?

Dr. Lam believes that the most successful treatments and relationships with patients include obtaining a thorough initial history to arrive at the most accurate diagnoses and issues leading to your consultation. All initial consultations include an in-person meeting with you, your family, or your child at the office. Evaluations will also include obtaining an extensive history, review of relevant documentation and telephone contacts with your other medical providers, treating clinicians, and school personnel, as seen appropriate and with your permission.

At the end of the consultation process, Dr. Lam will meet with you to discuss his diagnostic impressions and recommended treatment plan that is the most appropriate for you, your family, or your child. Treatment recommendations can include a combination of individual psychotherapy, medication management, or other modalities of psychotherapy, such as parent management training, family therapy, group or couples therapy. During the evaluation process and the course of treatment, Dr. Lam will always recommend the best treatment options; in certain cases, this may mean that he will provide you with the appropriate referrals to work with other expert physicians, psychologists, and/or clinicians.

Adults

Initial evaluation sessions for adults are generally 60 minutes in length, depending on complexity.

Children and Adolescents

Evaluations for children and adolescents generally consist of one or two sessions totaling 90 minutes during which Dr. Lam will meet with the child or adolescent, as well as parents or guardians.

Psychotherapy:

If psychotherapy is indicated, individual sessions are provided with or without medication management.  Therapy sessions are generally 30-45 minutes in length.

For children and adolescents, there will be periodic family meetings, which may be up to 60 minutes in length.

Medication Management:

If medication is indicated, medication management may be provided in conjunction with therapy or on its own. Medication management appointments without psychotherapy are up to 30 minutes in length.
